Dan Boel’s poetry collection, Kings of The F**king Sea follows a thirty-something American male on his adventure to confront his quarter-life crisis. He’s bogged down with the 9-5 live to work existence, so he does what any guy in a rut would do and joins a crew of pirates, takes to the sea, and begins a new life of smuggling and facing the everyday perils of the ocean. This book follows him away and home again. In this interview, you’ll gain some insight into Dan’s inspiration, his craft, and his collaboration with artist Jonathan Marshall.

DAN BOEHL is a founding editor of Birds, LLC, an independent poetry publisher, which put out his book Kings of the F**king Sea. His chapbook Les Miseres et les Mal-Heurs de la Guerre is available from Greying Ghost, and he has self-published a middle grade novel, Naomi and the Horse-Flavored T-Shirt, on the Amazon Kindle. He writes copy for the University of Texas at Austin.

RYAN CALL is the author of The Weather Stations (Caketrain). His stories appear in Mid-American Review, New York Tyrant, Conjunctions, Annalemma, and elsewhere. The recipient of a 2011 Whiting Writers’ Award, he teaches English and coaches cross country at a high school in Houston.

5)  Is ignorance bliss? Not really. When people don’t know what is going on, bad things happen. Like the Great Recession. That happened because no one was watching the banks rape and pillage ordinary citizens who wanted to pursue the American Dream and own homes. There are other examples of this, but in general, ignorance is awful. My novel and my first full-length book of poetry deal with this a lot.

Dan Boehl – Kings of the Fucking Sea

The strength of Boehl’s debut book of poetry is just that: it’s a debut.  His voice is fresh and ripe with experimentation and with unabashed vulnerability, all of which we attribute to his youth and fresh face but at the same time hope that he can maintain as he develops his craft.

Last summer I did a reading in Minnesota, and while I was there did a recording of some work for the Knox Writer’s House. They have a ton of interviews with poets talking about their home towns and reading their poems. And hand-draw portraits of everyone. I like mine, though it makes me look like I have a black beard. (I am blond!)

“Upon cover glance, it looks like reading “Double Rainbow,” Lisa Frank, and Dark Side of the Moon at once. After reading though, I was surprisingly left pondering our “war on terror,” the economic meltdown, Occupy Wall Street, and the euro crisis. Or Google-searching to see if “Pre-Chicken Nugget Paste” really exists, because Naomi provides descriptions of all things pasty, “for breakpaste, plunch, and dinner,” with an awareness of current corporate and economic issues I didn’t expect from something marketed specifically for youth.”
